His 1960 law allowed a specific type of company—called a real estate investment trust (REIT)—to pay no corporate taxes if it helped finance and develop commercial real estate projects across America. You read that correctly—zero corporate taxes (at a time when the top bracket exceeded 70%!) But here's the real kicker for investors like you… REITs let ordinary investors collect steady streams of income from some of the most lucrative commercial real estate in America—including hotels, hospitals, office parks and housing development—but without the hassle or expense of buying and managing the properties (no 3T's: toilets, trash, taxes.) In return for paying no corporate taxes, REITs have to pay at least 90% of their taxable income to their shareholders as dividends (most payout 100%).
